What buying a domain “at cost” actually means

Updated 2026-08-23

Every .com has the same wholesale price underneath. Here’s what registrars pay, what they charge, and how to pay the wholesale number yourself.

Every .com costs the registrar the same

Domains aren’t like retail goods with negotiated supplier prices. For each TLD there is one registry with one wholesale price. For .com, that registry is Verisign, and every accredited registrar on earth pays the same wholesale fee per year, plus a $0.20 ICANN transaction fee.

Verisign has announced the .com wholesale fee rises to $10.97 on 1 November 2026. Add the ICANN fee and the true industry cost of a .com lands at roughly $11.17 a year. Anything you pay above that is the registrar’s margin — which is fine, margins fund products, but it helps to know what the floor is.

Who actually sells at cost

Cloudflare Registrar is the notable at-cost seller: their stated policy is no markup at all — you pay what the registry and ICANN charge. Today that’s about $10.46 for a .com, and it will track the wholesale increase like everyone else’s costs do.

The catch is structural, not hidden: domains registered at Cloudflare use Cloudflare’s nameservers, and Cloudflare sells no aftermarket or premium inventory. At-cost selling is a loss leader for their other products, which is exactly why it stays cheap.

Why the checkout price isn’t the real price

Retail registrars compete on the first-year number: promotional pricing well below wholesale is common, because year one is a customer-acquisition cost. The renewal price is where the model recovers it. When you compare registrars, compare renewals — that’s the price you’ll pay nine times if you keep the domain a decade.

Where SpargoDomains fits

SpargoDomains registers domains through Cloudflare Registrar into your own Cloudflare account, so the domain price is the at-cost number and the renewal equals the registration. The software around it — naming, live checks, purchase safety, post-purchase watching — is the part we charge for (draft pricing, nothing charged yet). The domain math is Cloudflare’s, permanently.
