SpargoDomains vs Namecheap

Namecheap earned its reputation as the value alternative: cheap first-year promotions, free WHOIS privacy on every domain, and a huge TLD catalog. Its model is still retail — promotional pricing up front, standard pricing at renewal, and its own hosting and email products offered along the way. Their pricing page (linked below) is the source of truth; their site blocks automated checking, so this page quotes no numbers.

How Namecheap works

  • Free WHOIS privacy for life on every eligible domain — they pioneered making this standard.
  • Frequent first-year promotions; renewal rates are higher than the promotional price.
  • Very large TLD selection and a mature transfer-in flow.
  • Their own DNS, hosting, and email products are offered alongside domains (the upsells are gentler than the giants’, but present).
  • Many customers also run DNS and email forwarding at Namecheap — convenient, but it puts registration, DNS, and email in one failure domain. Our free DNS resilience checker exists to flag exactly that concentration, at any registrar.

How SpargoDomains works

  • Domains are registered through Cloudflare Registrar into your own Cloudflare account, at Cloudflare’s cost — about $10.46 for a .com today. We never touch the money, so a markup isn’t just absent, it’s impossible.
  • The renewal price is shown next to the first-year price before you commit, and it’s the same number — at-cost pricing has no promotional cliff.
  • No upsells anywhere: no hosting, no email plans, no site builders, no countdown timers. Search, confirm, done.
  • Price and availability are re-verified the moment before purchase; any change is a hard stop that asks you again. A purchase is never retried silently.
  • After you buy, the workspace keeps watching: Named → Pointed → Alive, from real DNS and HTTPS checks.
  • The honest catch: you need a Cloudflare account, domains there use Cloudflare nameservers, premium domains and transfers aren’t supported in the app yet, and the workspace itself will cost money (draft: $79/year founding) while the domains stay at cost.
